OUR CLASSES

Who may attend your school?

Any child who meets our age requirements and is toilet trained is welcome at our school.  We follow the age requirements of the local Pennridge school district; that is:

  • A child must be 5 years of age before September 1st in order to attend kindergarten.
  • A child must be 4 before September 1st in order to attend a 4 year old class.
  • A child must be 3 by September 1st to attend the 3 year old class.
  • The 4+ Class is composed of children needing a third year of nursery school, or children who have just missed the age cutoff.  Occasionally, we do fill empty slots in that class with younger 4 year olds who are recommended by the three year old teachers.

Although we embrace all children, the staff here at Deep Run Nursery School is not certified to teach those with special needs.

What is your curriculum based on?

We seek to provide your child with a complete nursery school experience.  Over the two (or three years) your child is with us, we take them through a progession of skills, develop a love of school and learning, and provide them with a variety of enriching experiences, all in a fun,  warm, nurturing, structured environment.  A brief summary of our curriculum is as follows:

2 Year Old "Time for Toddlers"

  • For 2 year olds accompanied by a caregiver.
  • Children must be 2 years old by September 1st
  • Tuesday or Thursday classes are from 9:15 to 10:15 AM
  • There are 5 sessions.  Each session will meet once a week for 6 weeks.  Sessions will be theme related.
  • The cost will be $60.00 per session
  • Class size will be limited to 10 children

 Three Year Olds

The primary focus of the three year old curriculum is the social development of the child.  We work on:

  • the ability of the child to separate from his/her parents
  • learning to be a part of a group
  • learning to interact with teachers and peers
  • the ability to follow classroom rules and schedules
  • We also introduce the children to kindergarten readiness skills such as:
  • colors and shapes
  • learning to use scissors and art supplies
  • counting and number recognition
  • small and large motor skill development
  • listening skills
  • the ability to follow directions
  • developing language skills
  • recognizing the letters of the alphabet
  • recognizing and beginning to write their names
  • science and social studies concepts
  • an appreciation of reading

These skills are woven into a playful, musical, art and literature-rich curriculum, based on seasonal, holiday, science and social studies themes.

Four Year Olds

The four year old program builds on the above skills, developing them to a greater degree.  Like the three year old program, this program is theme based.  Our focus for four year old program is to prepare our students make a happy and easy transition to kindergarten.  In our four year old program, our students will:

  • continue to develop their social skills in learning to work cooperatively in a classroom situation
  • continue to work on following more complex directions, working more independently
  • further develop their listening and language skills
  • develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts (such as shapes, size, patterning, recognition and writing of numbers, counting, measurements)
  • continuing to work on both visual and sound recognition of the letters of the alphabet, beginning to learn to write them
  • further development of early science and social studies concepts
  • further development of small and large motor skills

The 4+ Class

The 4+ class also builds on all of the above skills, but our curriculum is based on a “Letter of the Week” approach.   Our weekly letter is thoroughly explored, as the basis of many different kinds of activities.  We move at a faster pace than the 4 year old class, as far as the presentation of concepts.  We do include science, social studies, art, and literature-based activities.

Do you do anything “extra” during the year?

  • Our classes each enjoy a separate music class every week.  Our music teacher provides an exciting array of musical and movement experiences.
  • To enhance our curriculum, we invite guest visitors and go on field  trips related to what we are learning about.
  • Our guest visitors have included firefighters, policemen, dentists, nurses, librarians, Irish dancers, bus drivers and others.

Local trips vary according to the age groups.  All classes will go on different trips.

  • Threes visit a local farm in the spring.
  • The fours go on a variety of trips—the Mercer Log Cabin, Peace Valley Park, the scarecrows at Peddlers’ Village, a dentist’s office, to name a few.
  • The 4+ class goes on a “Look and Listen” walk at Peace Valley Park, go to a pumpkin patch, and visit the Michener Art museum, and a local supermarket, amongst other places of interest.
We have two major family parties every year—a Halloween and Christmas party filled with puppet shows, music, refreshments and even a special visitor at Christmas!  The Easter Bunny also comes to visit us every year, and we always enjoy a Teddy Bear picnic in January.  We end the year with a fun-filled “magical” family picnic at Peace Valley Park—with a magician, face painting, bubbles, and watermelon for everyone!
